A little understanding.
A whole new potential.

Start with the essentials. Build your intuition.
Then put Astra to work on something that matters.

01 / THE MINDSET SHIFT

Brief the outcome.
Define the boundaries.

Think of your prompt as a working brief: what needs to happen, what matters, and what a successful result looks like.

OpenAI describes Astra as more sensitive to instructions and more likely to clarify consequential gaps. Give it clear authority, concise style guidance, and proportionate verification. [1]

Coming from Sol, Terra or Luna? +

Keep the useful parts of your existing brief. GPT-5.6 already favors clear goals and lean instructions. Astra does not require a new language or a giant prompt.

More literal instruction following

Review old rules for conflicts. A stale “always ask” instruction can become a real interruption.

More clarification

Say which gaps may be inferred and which could change the outcome.

Detailed responses

Specify the audience, deliverable and useful length.

Thorough verification

Define meaningful checks and an observable finish line.

Behavioral guidance from the supplied JackGPT playbook, checked against Astra guidance [1] and GPT-5.6 guidance [6]. These are tendencies, not guarantees about every response.

THE JACKGPT BRIEF · A PRACTICAL FRAMEWORK
01

Outcome

What should exist when the task is done?

02

Context

What evidence and background matter?

03

Boundaries

What may it do? What needs your approval?

04

Acceptance

How will you know the result is good enough?

05

Delivery

What format and level of detail do you need?

02 / KNOW YOUR MODELS

Different strengths.
One informed choice.

Astra is GPT-6. Sol, Terra and Luna belong to GPT-5.6. These are model choices, not reasoning levels. [2–5]

1.05M context window · 128K max output
Shared published limits across all four models. Larger capacity does not guarantee perfect recall.
Standard API text rates per 1M tokens.
Checked 05 Sep 2026. API prices are not ChatGPT subscription prices.
How should I choose? +

JackGPT recommendation: test the least expensive candidate likely to satisfy your acceptance criteria. Move to a stronger model when important failures persist. Compare Sol as a flagship GPT-5.6 baseline; assess Astra on difficult, multi-step work. Use your own examples, including edge cases, before committing.

The official model positioning supports this starting point; it does not establish a universal quality ranking for every task or a fixed speed advantage. [8]

03 / FIND YOUR REASONING LEVEL

Choose the model.
Then choose the effort.

Capability is one decision. How much reasoning to use is another.

The explorer shows supported API values. Its task suggestions are JackGPT starting hypotheses, not performance guarantees. Available controls in ChatGPT or Codex may differ.

Astra supports low through max, without none. GPT-5.6 also supports none and documents medium as its default. [2] [6]

More reasoning is not a promise of correctness. Measure quality, time and cost.

06 / SMALL HABITS. BETTER RESULTS.

Keep the clarity.
Lose the friction.

Prompting principles from OpenAI, translated into JackGPT practice. [7] [9]

When the result is wrong: a practical repair loop +

1. Name the defect: missing field, unsupported fact, wrong scope, or unusable format.

2. Give the smallest corrective instruction: “Keep the existing structure. Replace unsupported claims with ‘not established’ and attach a source to each remaining claim.”

3. Recheck the affected requirement. If it still fails, improve the evidence, simplify the task, or test a stronger configuration.

4. Save the failure as an evaluation example. Do not keep changing unrelated prompt rules.

JackGPT workflow recommendation; validate it in your own use case.

07 / MAKE CAPABILITY COUNT

Optimize for
an accepted result.

The cheapest attempt can be an expensive way to get the job done.

Compare API spend alongside retries, review time and task completion. That is JackGPT’s evaluation framework, informed by OpenAI’s cost guidance. [8]

Start with relevant context and a clear output budget. For repeated requests, cache eligible stable prefixes and put changing material later. GPT-5.6 and later require at least 1,024 visible prefix tokens for caching. [10]

EXPLORE THE TOKEN ECONOMICS

Illustrative Standard API text calculation, USD/request. No caching, tool fees, taxes or processing discounts. Billed output must include reasoning tokens, not only visible text. Not a subscription estimate.
See the calculation +

(input tokens × input rate + billed output tokens × output rate) / 1,000,000

Above 272,000 input tokens, this calculator applies 2× input and 1.5× output rates to the full request. Rates: model sources [2–5].

08 / GO FURTHER

A little more control.
A lot more intention.

For builders and curious power users.
API capabilities require application support.

MIGRATION

Clean up the old prompt.

Audit stale skills and instruction files. Specify delegation and testing scope. For Astra tool use, use Responses; remove unsupported sampling parameters. [1]

Developer checklist +
  • Set model to gpt-6-astra.
  • Replace a previous none/minimal effort with low as a test baseline.
  • Remove temperature, top_p and log-probability options.
  • Compare on representative tasks before rollout.
  • Keep secrets in your server environment, never browser code.
ORCHESTRATION

Steer work as it happens.

Astra adds asynchronous tools and mid-turn steering; an application can also update reasoning during a conversation while preserving the original cache prefix. These are integration features. [1]

Example steering message +

“Keep the completed research. Narrow the recommendation to the two options that fit our budget. Finish the comparison before preparing any implementation.”

JackGPT illustrative wording. The host must support delivery while work is running.

EVALUATION

Define your finish line.

Build a small set of real tasks with both normal cases and difficult exceptions. Score factual support, required fields, instruction adherence, completion, cost and correction time.
