Google announced a whitepaper on November 4, 2026, setting out how it evaluates general-purpose generative AI in health. The framework combines closed-question benchmarks, AI autoraters and expert human review to judge accuracy, safety and usefulness across common and high-risk scenarios. The author, Dr. Sarah Montgomery-Taylor, is clinical evaluation lead at Google for Health; Dr. Elizabeth McGlynn and Dr.

Dana Gelb Safran partnered on the work. Google says it built the approach and continues to use it to assess whether its models provide useful, accurate responses that support safe health interactions. Publishing the methodology is intended to promote transparency and help developers, researchers and clinicians build tools people can trust. The authors argue that evaluation methods built for isolated tasks do not adequately cover general-purpose models.

Their example is a pre-generative AI model that can detect lung cancer on a CT scan but cannot detect breast cancer on a mammogram or summarize a conversation into a note.
