A last-minute sick call can turn a small business owner’s morning into a search for someone to cover a shift. Homebase is making that familiar problem a central use case for Homebase Assistant, a new AI offering designed to take on staffing, hiring, timecard checks, and labor-cost monitoring for hourly teams.
Announced on October 20, the Assistant can identify available employees, contact potential replacements, and fill a shift using the owner’s preferences and historical context, according to the company. Homebase says owners retain the final say and set the guardrails within which the system operates. The product is initially available to a limited number of businesses.
The launch brings action-taking AI into a setting where administrative work often falls to the person also serving customers, managing inventory, or opening the shop. Its practical value will depend on whether it can reliably complete those everyday workflows without creating another queue of decisions for the owner to review.
Homebase Assistant’s shift-coverage workflow illustrates what the company is trying to automate. Detecting a gap is only the beginning: finding a replacement also requires checking availability, contacting people, and updating the schedule when someone agrees. Homebase says its Assistant handles that sequence with the business’s preferences in mind.
“Most AI tools would just tell you the shift is uncovered. Homebase Assistant finds someone who can cover it and gets the owner back to work,” said John Waldmann, Homebase’s founder and CEO, in the announcement.
The Assistant also builds schedules, helps write job posts, screens candidates, and coordinates interviews. For payroll preparation, it flags missing punches and other timecard problems early enough for an owner to resolve them before running payroll.
