Google on October 15, 2026 launched Universal Cart in the U.S., rolling out the shopping cart it previewed at Google I/O 2026 in May across Google Search and the Gemini app.
The launch was announced by Suresh Ganapathy, Google’s senior director of product management for consumer shopping, in a post on The Keyword. Ganapathy described Google’s commerce work as proceeding on two fronts: developing agentic capabilities that act on a shopper’s behalf, and designing practical tools that give shoppers confidence and control. Universal Cart, he wrote, is built for that second track, mirroring how people already shop across Google without losing track of their items, their savings, or the merchants they trust.
Checkout in the cart is powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP.
Google describes Universal Cart as an intelligent shopping cart and a hub for shopping on Google, and the company is pitching it as a holiday-shopping tool. The first of the four features Google highlights is organization: the cart saves products from multiple retailers wherever the user is shopping on Google, preserving progress across Google surfaces so a shopper does not have to start over.
In Google’s example, a handbag saved from Steve Madden in AI Mode in Search, followed by a sweater from Quince and lipgloss from Ulta Beauty in the Gemini app, remains in the same cart when the shopper returns. Google presents this as a more organized alternative to browser tabs and screenshots.
The cart is built on the 60+ billion continually refreshed product listings in Google’s Shopping Graph.
